The Bengal Cat is a hybrid, created by crossing Asian Leopard Cats with domestic cats. Bengals were recognised as a breed in America in 1986.
After 40 years of selective breeding, Bengals have become a wholly domesticated cat while retaining the unique beauty of the Leopard Cat.
Subsequently, new colours were also accepted into the standard by selectively introducing various purebred breeds. Siamese produced blue-eyed lynx snow. Burmese produced green-eyed sepia snow, and together these breeds produce aqua-eyed mink snow. Silver American spotted short-hairs contributed to the stunning silver Bengal, the "Snow Leopard" of the breed. Charcoal Bengals of any colour inherit a dark face mask and cape over shoulders and back, with light goggles around their eyes from their Asian Leopard Cat ancestor.
The Asian Leopard Cat is an accomplished swimmer and fish catcher.
Bengals ancestral instinct is apparent as they're drawn to water.
